Honda to lease fuel cell vehicle in Japan, U.S.

TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. will lease its fuel cell vehicle FCX (photo) in Japan and the United States from Dec. 2, the same date that rival Toyota Motor Corp. will start leasing its own fuel cell vehicle. The four-seat FCX, which uses hydrogen instead of gasoline as its power source, can run at a maximum speed of 150 kilometers per hour and can travel about 355 km on one tank of hydrogen. It will be leased for 800,000 yen a month under a 12-month contract, 400,000 yen lower than the leasing fee set by Toyota for its FCHV sport utility vehicle. (Kyodo)

          Demonstration experiment using Osaka City University's fuel-cell vehicles to operate ships on hydrogen

          Shigeyuki Minami, a special-appointment professor at the Organization for Advanced Research and Development, Osaka City University, and his colleagues on April 1 unveiled a demonstration experiment of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered ship (photo) that can drive a fuel cell vehicle as a hydrogen power generation system. It was jointly developed with Current Dynamics (Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City). It will be equipped with Toyota Motor Corporation's "MIRAI" fuel cell vehicle and can carry up to 50 cubic meters of hydrogen. It has already obtained an operation license from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It can travel for about 13 hours at a speed of 8 kilometers per hour, and about 93 hours at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour. Professor Minami said, "We would like to confirm that it is safe and can run for a long time, and use this as a trigger for the development of fuel cell ships.             Toyota Motor Corporation's Special Mobility for the Tokyo Olympics

            On April 18, Toyota Motor Corporation unveiled to the press the APM (Accessible People Mover), an electric vehicle (EV) specially designed for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The APM will be used to transport the elderly, parents with infants, wheelchair users, spectators and athletes around the venue. The APM is an open-type vehicle with doors removed on both sides and can accommodate up to six people, including the driver. It is designed to be easy to get in and out of and easy for volunteers to drive. A ramp is stored under the floor, and the center seat can be folded to allow wheelchair access. The vehicle measures 3.9 meters in length, 1.6 meters in width, and 2 meters in height, has a maximum speed of 19 kilometers per hour, and can travel 100 kilometers on a single charge.
