World's oldest lacquer items destroyed in Hokkaido fire
HAKODATE, Japan - Researchers examine the debris of a fire that gutted a research office for buried cultural properties in the town of Minamikayabe, Hokkaido, on Dec. 29. Tens of thousands of historic artifacts, including some of the world's oldest lacquer products, were destroyed in the fire took place at around 11:40 p.m. on Dec. 28. (Kyodo)
