Deep-sea research vessel calls at Osaka port

OSAKA, Japan - Japan's deep-sea research vessel Chikyu (Earth) designed to take the first-ever samples from the Earth's mantle enters Osaka port on June 16. The 57,087-ton ship owned by the Japan Marine Sciences and Technology Center will be open to the general public at the port's Tempozan quay on the weekend.

Owner of table-sized used-books store seeks record in Guinness B

NAHA, Japan - Tatsuya Tokuzawa, owner of this store in Naha, Okinawa, plans to apply to be listed as the world's smallest used-books store in the Guinness Book of World Records. The store ''Tokufukudo,'' is 1.35 square meters in size, 1.8 meters in depth, 75 centimeters in width and 2.75 meters in height. It has about 250 books, including novels and photo collections, in a handmade wooden bookshelf, leaving only a 55 cm width for the isle. (Kyodo)

Japanese research ship heads to Indonesia to study quake mechanism

KAGOSHIMA, Japan - The 1,739-ton Natsushima, a deep-sea research vessel of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, heads to Indonesia on Feb. 2 to conduct research on underwater topography to study earthquake-causing mechanisms. Researchers aboard the ship plan to conduct the research for about a month, from February to March, near the epicenter of the Dec. 26 earthquake off northern Sumatra, which triggered the deadly Asian tsunami.

NAHA, Japan - Prefectural government officials and railway company executives celebrate the inauguration of Okinawa's first postwar railway service in a gala ceremony on Aug. 10. 640-meter underwater cave, Japan's largest, found in Okinawa

NAHA, Japan - An Okinawa diver says he has found a mammoth underwater stalactite cave, believed to be the biggest discovered so far in Japan, near the Manzamo resort in Onna, Okinawa Prefecture. The cave consists of a labyrinth of passageways about 640 meters in length, 150 meters longer than another Okinawa underwater cave, the 490-meter-long Hidenchigama cave off Kume Island. Marine in Okinawa rape case wants trial moved to U.S.

NAHA, Japan - Toshimitsu Takaesu (R), a lawyer for U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Michael Brown, accused of attempting to rape a woman in Okinawa last November, meets reporters after the first hearing of his trial at the Naha District Court on March 13. Takaesu said Brown is innocent and the trial should be moved to the United States.
