Japan woos Taiwanese, H.K. visitors through ads

TOKYO, Japan - The Japanese government is heading a ''Visit Japan Campaign,'' by placing full-page ads (in photo) in newspapers in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The two areas were hard hit by the SARS epidemic and Japan discouraged tourism from there while the epidemic was at its height earlier this year. The ads are scheduled to be published in four Taiwanese newspapers on July 30 and in three Hong Kong newspapers on Aug. 5. (Kyodo)

Gov't eyes using gardens to combat rising temperatures

TOKYO, Japan - A building complex (in photo taken Aug. 12) in Tokyo's Roppongi district has a garden on its roof. Government officials said Aug. 13 they intend to submit a bill to the Diet requiring structures that will be built mainly in urban areas to allot space on their premises for gardens to combat excessive warming. The ''heat island phenomenon'' occurs when temperatures in the center of large cities are higher than surrounding areas due mainly to concentrated development and massive energy consumption. (Kyodo)
