Sanyo to offer plasma TVs for terrestrial digital broadcasts

OSAKA, Japan - Sanyo Electric Co. said Aug. 6 it will release plasma-display television sets (in handout photo) equipped with built-in tuners for terrestrial digital broadcasts for the first time. Beginning on Oct. 1, the consumer electronics maker will offer 11 models, with 37- or 42-inch screens, in its Vizon series at prices ranging from 720,000 yen to 930,000 yen. (Kyodo)

                  Panasonic will increase its share of the domestic market for 60-inch and larger electronic blackboards to 30% (4,000 units) in fiscal 2008, up 10 percentage points from fiscal 2006, using 4K high-definition touch-screen LCD displays. The estimated market price is 600,000 yen (excluding consumption tax) for the 65-inch model and 1,400,000 yen for the 75-inch model. A new "comparison mode" that can display up to nine screens has been added so that multiple opinions can be shown on the display and shared in group learning. Up to four teaching materials can be displayed so that digital textbooks can be used effectively. It has acquired "Color Universal Design Certification" for its color scheme, which is distinguishable even by people with color blindness. Sharp (36%), Panasonic (25%), and NEC (16%) hold the largest share of the domestic market for commercial displays.                     Japan Display Inc. (JDI) has finalized a new fundraising framework totaling over 100 billion yen. In addition to raising 80-90 billion yen from Ichigo Asset Group, an independent investment fund, JDI will also sell some of its facilities at its Hakusan plant (Hakusan, Ishikawa Prefecture) to Apple Inc. On April 12, JDI announced that it had reached a basic agreement with Ichigo Trust to raise up to 90 billion yen from Ichigo. Minoru Kikuoka, president of JDI, explained the purpose of the framework at a press conference on January 12, saying, "We will sell assets in order to enhance our capital and at the same time minimize the impact on existing shareholders through dilution.                       During the summer vacation, parents and children of all ages can enjoy the Showa, Heisei and Showa-Japanese Plarail models. The "Plarail 60th Anniversary Exhibition," which is being held by TOMY at the Railway Museum (Omiya-ku, Saitama City) untilSeptember 1, is a great success. It has become so popular that 60% of the visitors to the museum also visit the exhibition. In addition to the diorama of the E5 Series Shinkansen Hayabusa, more than 150 items of Plarail are on display. Visitors can learn about the history and manufacturing process of Plarail. The exhibition is open to the public only with the admission fee to the Railway Museum. Plarail was launched in 1959 as a toy made of plastic, the latest material at the time, when metal and wooden toys were the mainstream.
