OSAKA, Japan - Mamoru Takuma (file photo) was sentenced to death on Aug. 28 for murdering eight children and injuring 13 others and two teachers in a stabbing rampage at the Ikeda Elementary School in Osaka Prefecture in June 2001. Presiding Judge Masayuki Kawaai read out the sentence in the absence of Takuma, 39, who caused a commotion and was removed from the courtroom on the judge's orders. (Kyodo)

Anti-death penalty campaigners criticize executions in Japan

OSAKA, Japan - Osamu Kishimoto, coordinator of Amnesty International Japan, speaks at a press conference in Osaka on Sept. 14 in protest of the executions earlier in the day of two death-row inmates, including Mamoru Takuma, 40, who murdered eight schoolchildren in Osaka Prefecture in 2001 in a school attack. Victims of stabbing incident remembered in Osaka

OSAKA, Japan - Students at Ikeda Elementary School in Osaka ring eight bells during a memorial service June 8 in memory of eight children who were stabbed to death three years ago when a man went on a stabbing rampage at the school. About 700 people attended the ceremony at which a 4.5-meter monument, with eight bells and inscribed with the names of the victims, was unveiled. (Kyodo)

High court upholds death sentence on AUM's Hayakawa

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo High Court upheld on May 14 a death sentence imposed on former senior AUM Shinrikyo member Kiyohide Hayakawa (file photo) for crimes including the murders of a lawyer and his family and of an AUM member who wanted to leave the cult. Hayakawa, 54, pleaded guilty in all seven cases in which he was charged, which also included building a plant in Yamanashi Prefecture to mass-produce the nerve gas sarin used in the 1995 fatal attack on the Tokyo subway system.
