Hitachi develops new biometric identification system

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. said on Sept. 1 it has developed an identification system based on the pattern of veins in fingers (shown in photo) as the race to develop biometric identification systems intensifies among Japanese high-tech companies. Hitachi claims the functionality of the new system is among the highest in the world as it takes only one second to identify an individual and has an error rate of close to zero. (Kyodo)

The data is sent via wireless LAN to an antenna several dozen meters away. The data is collected in the "Machine Dossier" cloud system. The data is displayed in an easy-to-understand manner using graphs and other data. Amazon's Amazon Web Services (AWS) is used as the system infrastructure. The data can be easily viewed on smartphones and other devices. The annual fee for using the system is 48,000 yen (excluding consumption tax) for each eight-point sensor. SEC of America (North Carolina), a wholly owned subsidiary in the U.S., develops and produces the system.                   FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation (HD), which will acquire Hitachi, Ltd.'s diagnostic imaging systems such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance tomography (MRI), as well as electronic medical record (EMR) related services, held a press conference in Tokyo on April 18, and Chairman Shigetaka Komori emphasized the significance of the acquisition, saying, "The healthcare domain is a market with high growth potential.
