FUJIFILM Holdings (HD) announced on November 5 that it will make Fuji Xerox its wholly owned subsidiary in early November. The company will acquire 25% of Fuji Xerox's shares and its stake in its U.S. affiliates, and pay a total of $2.3 billion (about 253 billion yen) to Xerox. When Xerox fell into financial difficulties, Fujifilm HD announced in 2006 that it would acquire shares in Xerox and aim for a management integration between Xerox and Fuji Xerox. However, shareholders opposed to the acquisition of Xerox filed a lawsuit to stop the acquisition, and a U.S. court ruled to temporarily halt the acquisition, and the newly-elected management team of Xerox announced the cancellation of the acquisition agreement at the shareholders' meeting. As a result of Xerox's cancellation of the agreement, Fujifilm HD had filed a claim for damages, but has now given up on the acquisition of Xerox. Inspection Robot for Jibiru Survey Design

Jibiru Survey & Design (Fukui City) has completed a dedicated base for bridge inspection support robots on land adjacent to its headquarters plant. The investment was about 40 million yen. The company expects to receive more inquiries after its robot was listed in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's new technology guidelines, and aims to receive orders for the inspection of about 400 bridges a year. In 2008, Jibiru Survey & Design entered the bridge inspection robot business, aiming to diversify its business from construction consulting. By the end of March 2007, the company had inspected 334 bridges. In February 2007, the Japanese government published a list of guidelines and new technologies that can be used as a guide for bridge inspections, and the company's robots were included in the list. 32 women file damages suit over Kanebo's skin-whitening cosmetics

Rickshaws, banned in West Bengal, still ply in Kolkata streets

KOLKATA, India - Rickshaw drivers wait for their fares in the East India city of Kolkata. The state government of West Bengal banned rickshaws as ''inhuman'' a year ago, but rickshaws still provide an inexpensive means of transport for the citizens in Kolkata. Rickshaw drivers say they can rent a rickshaw for 20 rupees (about 60 yen) a day. One 60-year-old driver says he can earn 50 rupees a day after paying the rental fee. ''I can hardly give up this way of life. In the past, there were times when I took in only 10 rupees in cash a month as a farmer in my hometown,'' he says.

OSAKA, Japan - Prosecutors walk into the Osaka District Court on May 27 to attend the trial of Mitsuru Asada, former chairman of meat packer Hannan Corp., who was indicted for swindling the government out of more than 5 billion yen by abusing a state beef buyback program established to calm concerns over mad cow disease. The court sentenced Asada to seven years in prison. (Kyodo)
