UENO, Japan, Aug. 11 Kyodo - Relatives of the 1985 Japan Airlines jet crash victims pay tribute to their loved ones on Aug. 11, 2017, on the eve of the 32nd anniversary of the disaster, by floating paper lanterns on a river in the mountainous village of Ueno in Gunma Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo. On Aug. 12, 1985, Flight 123, en route from Tokyo to Osaka with 524 passengers and crew aboard, crashed into Osutaka Ridge in the village, killing all but four in the world's deadliest single-aircraft accident.

JAL plane makes emergency landing after pressurization trouble

TOKUSHIMA, Japan - A Japan Airlines Airbus A300 is parked at Tokushima airport after making an emergency landing at the airport late July 23 after oxygen masks were deployed in the cabin due to a malfunction in the aircraft's pressurization equipment. The plane landed safely, but three passengers complained of ear pains after arrival, JAL officials said.

Wife of alleged JAL plane hijacker released on bail

TOKYO, Japan - Emiko Akagi, whose husband was allegedly involved in a 1970 hijacking by Red Army Faction members of a Japan Airlines (JAL) plane to North Korea, leaves the Tokyo Detention House in Tokyo's Katsushika Ward on July 30. Earlier, the Tokyo High Court rejected an appeal by the prosecutors against a decision of the Tokyo District Court to grant her bail of 20 million yen. Akagi is on trial on passport violation charges.

Ex-Red Army Faction member gets 12 yrs for 1970 JAL hijacking

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Feb. 14 sentenced former Red Army Faction member Yoshimi Tanaka (file photo) to a 12-year jail term for his involvement in the 1970 hijacking of a Japan Airlines plane. Tanaka and eight other Red Army Faction members hijacked the Boeing 727 on March 31, 1970, after it left Tokyo bound for Fukuoka, southwestern Japan.

JAL DC-10 engine to be examined

NAGOYA, Japan - A jet engine is removed from a Japan Airlines DC-10 plane for scrutiny June 28. The plane bound for Bangkok returned to Nagoya on June 27 due to engine trouble that caused small pieces of debris to fall on houses and factories in nearby Komaki city in Aichi Prefecture. No injuries were reported among the about 200 people on board Flight 737 or from those on the ground.
