Honda devises system to warn driver of approaching pedestrians

TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. has developed the world's first pedestrian-warning system (image in photo) that uses ''far infrared'' cameras to detect pedestrians at night and gives the driver visual and audio cautions to prevent pedestrian-related accidents. The new system will be available on the Honda Legend car models to be released in Japan this fall, the automaker said on Aug. 24. (068 Kyodo)

            The city of Oita will operate an automated low-speed electric small bus for citizens in the center of the city until March 20 (photo). The buses will be operated automatically, equivalent to "Level 2," with a driver on board and an automatic driving system to assist with steering correction and speed adjustment. The buses will be in operation from 10:00 to 16:15. Rides will be accepted at the drop-off and pick-up points on a first-come, first-served basis. Since the previous experiment, a new system for automatically changing lanes and other features have been added. The city is also planning to operate an automated vehicle in the city center during the Rugby World Cup in October.               On August 16, Sekisui House developed "Smart Inspection," a home inspection system that utilizes flying robots (drones), under-floor inspection robots, and multi-robot cameras in the shed, and demonstrated it to the press (photo). The system, which will be launched on August 1 at 29 customer centers across the country, uses drones and other equipment to take detailed images during regular inspections, and skilled experts to immediately determine problems via the cloud. It is said to be the first inspection system in the housing industry that uses advanced equipment for remote diagnosis. The customer's room will not be dirty or scratched. All 10 items to be inspected will be captured in high-definition images and judged by skilled experts through the cloud.
