Adventurer Oba plans 3,800-km trek across Canadian Artic from Fe

TOKYO, Japana - Japanese adventurer Mitsuro Oba points to a route in the Canadian tundra in the Arctic Circle in a photo taken in Tokyo on Nov. 25. He is planning a 3,800-kilometer trek across the area for four months beginning in February 2005. The 51-year-old Oba, who is currently on a six-year project to trek around the world to educate children about environmental issues, will be joined by Canadian, Norwegian and Russian adventurers on the journey. Historian Ienaga dies at 89

TOKYO, Japan - Saburo Ienaga (in file photo taken in February 1997), a historian known for his legal battle against the government certification of history textbooks, died Nov. 29 at a Tokyo hospital, people familiar with him said Dec. 1. He was 89. Ienaga became politically involved when a high-school textbook he penned, which contained descriptions of Japan's war crimes during World War II, was rejected by the then Education Ministry during the certification process in 1953. He filed the first of three suits in 1965 against the Education Ministry and was finally awarded damages in 1997 after a 32-year-long legal battle.

Japan explorer completes 50,000-km trek to trace man's origins

LAETOLI, Tanzania - Yoshiharu Sekino (in file photo), a 53-year-old Japanese explorer, completed Feb. 10 a 50,000-kilometer series of journeys across 35 countries to retrace in reverse the ''great journey'' believed to have been made by humanity as it moved from Africa to other parts of the world beginning millions of years ago. Sekino arrived at his final destination Laetoli, an archaeological site in Tanzania said to be the cradle of the human race
