Imashirozuka Tomb believed to have been emperor's grave

OSAKA, Japan - What looks like a drainage pipe-like system features a large keyhole-shaped tomb mound in Takatsuki, Osaka Prefecture. Tha Takatsuki education board said on Feb. 17 that the tomb, apparently built in the early 6th century, is believed to be the grave of an emperor, judging by the sophisticated method used to protect burial accessories. The drainage system that prevented water from building up in its chamber and damaging burial accessories, it said. (Kyodo)

NARA, Japan - The 350-year-old main hall of Hasedera temple in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, stands damaged by a falling tree on March 5. The prefectural board of education said that the hall, designated by the government as an important cultural asset, suffered partial damage when the tree fell after rain had loosened the soil. Experts believe Osaka tomb artifact largest of its kind

OSAKA, Japan - An official at a cultural assets center in Takatsuki, Osaka Prefecture, on May 23 points to what researchers believe is Japan's largest tomb artifact in the shape of a temple. The artifact was unearthed last September from the ruins of a sixth-century burial mound in northern Osaka.

Tomb mound in Shiga Pref., dated to early 3rd century

OTSU, Japan - A local education board official points to the remains of the Jingokamezuka tomb mound in the town of Notogawa in Shiga Prefecture on Feb. 28. The board said the tomb mound has been confirmed to date to the early third century after some 20 shards of earthenware made in the period were found in gutters around it.

Nara cart wheel claimed to be oldest in Japan

SAKURAI, Japan - A section of a wooden cart wheel shown to the media at the Sakurai Burial Property Center in Nara Prefecture on Dec. 4, 2001 is claimed to be the oldest of its kind in Japan. A city education board official guessed the wheel, unearthed from the Kodachi burial mound in Sakurai, may date back to or before the Askua Era (694-710).
