6-limb disaster rescue robot unveiled by Osaka Univ.

OSAKA, Japan - Researchers at Osaka University unveiled a robot with six limbs on June 6 that can be used in disaster rescue efforts as it walks on unleveled ground and moves by hanging from net-shaped wires. The robot, named Asterisk because of its shape, carries a video camera and can be operated remotely through video images it sends over a wireless connection, the researchers said. (Kyodo)

      Nine robot-related companies in Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture, havebegun development of a new plant inspection crawler-type robot. With the help of a 15 million yen subsidy from Fukushima Prefecture to strengthen the robot industry infrastructure, they began designing the robot in June and will complete a prototype in December. The goal is to complete the robot in 2008 and introduce it to plants and disaster response organizations in 2009.
