Crude oil hits record intraday high of 42,310 yen in Tokyo

OITA, Japan - A filling station in the city of Oita in northeastern Kyushu marks up its gasoline retail prices as crude oil futures hit a record intraday high of 42,310 yen per kiloliter in Tokyo on Aug. 31. The intraday high for the benchmark September contract for Middle Eastern crude oil was up the limit-high of 1,000 yen from the previous day's close. One kiloliter equals 6.29 barrels. (Kyodo)

                The construction cost was not disclosed, but it is estimated to be several percent higher than the usual cost of about 600 million yen. The station will produce hydrogen using city gas from a medium-pressure pipeline. Carbon dioxide (CO2) generated in the process of mining and burning liquefied natural gas (LNG) is offset. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to have more than 100 fuel cell buses in use by the end of this year, and the Toyosu Hydrogen Station will be responsible for supplying hydrogen to the city's fuel cell buses. Takashi Anamizu, vice president of Tokyo Gas, said on the same day that he expects the station's operation rate to increase significantly.
