Ozawa, Koizumi debate ends lukewarm with narrow focus on educati
TOKYO, Japan - Democratic Party of Japan leader Ichiro Ozawa (L) puts a question during his first Diet debate with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on May 17. The session fell far short of the heated debate that many had expected. Ozawa focused on general principles of parliamentary operations and on the two camps' disagreement over an education bill. He did not take up issues such as the realignment of the U.S. military presence in Japan, economic disparities and social welfare problems, and Japan's diplomatic relations with East Asia. (Kyodo)
