Special law enacted to relieve Kanemi food poisoning victims
TOKYO, Japan - Acting agriculture minister Masatoshi Wakabayashi bows from the government bench of the House of Councillors on June 1 after the parliament enacted a special law to relieve victims of the 1968 food poisoning caused by contaminated cooking oil of Fukuoka Prefecture-based manufacturer Kanemi Soko K.K. The law is designed to exempt most of the 504 victims required to return to the state a total of 1.7 billion yen paid immediately after a court ruling in favor of their damages suit. (Kyodo)
