LDP branch reports spending without copies of receipts

CHIBA, Japan - The ruling Liberal Democratic Party's Chiba prefectural branch has reported about 99 million yen in spending for 2006 based on its own system without attaching copies of some 140 receipts for the sum, Kyodo News found Oct. 3. The political funds report is attached to a list of the chapter's expenses showing dates and amounts spent as well as the companies or organizations that received the money, but lacks seals or revenue stamps confirming the recipients (shown in photo), Kyodo found after examining the report. OSAKA, Japan - A political organization affiliated with former farm minister Mineichi Iwanaga (file photo) neglected to report 60 million yen in donations from a religious group in its political funds reports. Iwanaga, a 67-year-old lawmaker of the Liberal Democratic Party, served as the agriculture, forestry and fisheries minister in 2005 in the Cabinet of then Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. (Kyodo)

Ex-SDP policy chief Tsujimoto not to run in election

TOKYO, Japan - The Osaka chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) decided Oct. 4 not to support former SDP policy chief Kiyomi Tsujimoto (file photo) in the next House of Representatives election. Tsujimoto was indicted in August on charges of defrauding the state out of nearly 19 million yen in funds earmarked for her secretaries.
