Okinawa civic group demands gov't rescind textbook rewrite
TOKYO, Japan - An Okinawa civic group stages a protest rally near the Diet on Oct. 15, hoisting a banner demanding that the education ministry withdraw an order to textbook publishers to remove references to the involvement of the Japanese military in forcing civilians in Okinawa to commit mass suicide during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. The government is under pressure to rescind the order after 110,000 people took part in protest rallies across Okinawa in late September. (Kyodo)
