Budget, tax bills pass lower house amid opposition boycott
TOKYO, Japan - With the opposition benches empty, members of the ruling coalition at the House of Representatives vote in a late night session Feb. 29 to approve an 83 trillion yen state budget and a tax reform bill for fiscal 2008, ensuring that the budget will become law in time for the start of the new fiscal year on April 1. The opposition parties, excluding the Japanese Communist Party, boycotted the vote on grounds that there had been insufficient deliberation on the bills. (Kyodo)
