Turkish leader pays tribute to victims of sunken Turkish warship

KUSHIMOTO, Japan - Turkish President Abdullah Gul and his wife Hayrunisa attend a memorial ceremony in Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, on June 7 for the crew of a Turkish warship that sank in 1890 off the Wakayama town. The Ertugrul Firkateyni traveled to Japan for a reciprocal visit following a trip to Istanbul by Japanese Prince and Princess Komatsu in 1887. The warship was caught in a typhoon while returning home and sank off the coast of Kushimoto. Of about 650 people on board, only 69 survived and returned home after local residents rescued them.
