Saury fishermen halt work in appeal for government fuel cost aid

KUSHIRO, Japan - Sauries are landed from a fishing boat at Kushiro port in eastern Hokkaido on Aug. 18 before members of two major saury fishermen's groups from across Japan suspended work in a one-day appeal for government help to ameliorate their financial plight stemming from soaring fuel costs.                     The construction cost was not disclosed, but it is estimated to be several percent higher than the usual cost of about 600 million yen. The station will produce hydrogen using city gas from a medium-pressure pipeline. Carbon dioxide (CO2) generated in the process of mining and burning liquefied natural gas (LNG) is offset. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to have more than 100 fuel cell buses in use by the end of this year, and the Toyosu Hydrogen Station will be responsible for supplying hydrogen to the city's fuel cell buses. Takashi Anamizu, vice president of Tokyo Gas, said on the same day that he expects the station's operation rate to increase significantly.
