Japan launches satellite to study Earth's greenhouse gases

HIGASHIOSAKA, Japan - People involved in the development of the Maido No. 1 satellite were jubilant in Higashiosaka, Osaka Prefecture, as they watched the successful launch of the H-2A rocket carrying their small satellite, among others, that was developed in the city, on Jan. 23. The project to develop Maido No. 1 to observe the formation of thunder clouds has drawn attention since its launch in 2002, as a group of people including those at nine small factories in the local community were involved in the project.
