Cabinet approves bill to pave way for consumption tax hike

TOKYO, Japan - Prime Minister Taro Aso (C) chats with Kaoru Yosano (R), minister for economic and fiscal policy, in a room at the premier's office before an extraordinary Cabinet meeting Jan. 23. Aso's Cabinet endorsed a bill to revise the nation's taxation system, which includes a supplementary clause that lays the groundwork for raising the consumption tax from the current 5 percent.
