Elementary school children visit on March 2, 2015, a monument of the former Japanese Imperial Army's First Meteorological Regiment in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture, western Japan. Miyuki Yashiro, an 89-year-old former Kobe College professor who long suffered from gender identity disorder before undergoing sex reassignment surgery to become a woman 11 years ago, worked as a telecommunications soldier handling meteorological information at the regiment during World War II.
