Japanese WWII veteran recalls fierce west Pacific island battle
Keiji Nagai, a 93-year-old former Japanese Imperial Army soldier, recalls at his home in Ibaraki, northeast of Tokyo, on March 30, 2015, the fierce World War II battle on Peleliu Island in the western Pacific republic of Palau in 1944 in which almost all 10,000 Japanese garrison soldiers perished. He said it would have been easier for him to have chosen an honorable suicide by charging enemy forces than hiding in the island's jungle and suffering from hunger. (Kyodo)
