U.S. Marines lead "Black Ship Festival" parade in Shizuoka Pref.

A group of U.S. Marines, holding the Japanese and U.S. national flags, leads a parade at the Black Ship Festival in Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, on May 16, 2015. The festival celebrates the arrival in Japan in 1853 of a squadron of U.S. vessels -- then called "Black Ships" -- led by Commodore Matthew Perry on a mission to demand the secluded country's opening to the rest of the world.
