Emperor, empress visit Iwoto Island
Emperor Akihito (L) and Empress Michiko pour water on the cenotaph to commemorate the war dead on Iwoto Island, previously known as Iwojima, some 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo. About 20,000 Japanese soldiers died on the island, in one of the fiercest battles toward the end of WWII. Photo taken in February 1994. (Kyodo)
