People forced to vacate homes for Haneda airport recall memories
Katsumi Hashizume recalls in an interview in Tokyo on Oct. 19, 2015, how his family and neighbors were ordered by U.S.-led occupation forces to evacuate their homes within 48 hours in September 1945 to make way for the expansion of Haneda airport in the Japanese capital. Amid government plans for further expansion of the airport ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Hashizume and other former residents, most over 80 years old, want the public to remember their sacrifices.
