Researchers gather in Lebanon to save Syrian ruins
File photo taken in July 2014 shows the 2,000-year-old Arch of Triumph in Palmyra, the central Syrian city home to many important ruins, before it was destroyed by the Islamic State militant group in 2015. A four-day session for the International Syrian Congress on Archaeology and Cultural Heritage began in Beirut, Lebanon on Dec. 3, 2015, in which around 100 researchers from Syria, Japan and Europe gathered to work together to save Syrian ruins from destruction and illegal digging.
