Japanese apricot blossom festival at Kyoto shrine
Geisha and "maiko" apprentice geisha entertainers welcome visitors to a Japanese apricot blossom festival on Feb. 25, 2016, at the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto, western Japan, where some 1,500 red and white apricot trees are in bloom. The annual festival, held on the anniversary of the death of Sugawara no Michizane, a ninth century scholar and poet enshrined there, has a history dating back about 900 years, according to the shrine.
