Japanese, U.S. governments meet for discussions over Monju reactor

Representatives from the Japanese and U.S. governments meet in Vienna on Sept. 25, 2016, for discussions to potentially scrap the Monju fast-breeder unit in the Sea of Japan coastal city of Tsuruga. The Japanese government decided Sept. 21 to rethink its policy on the plutonium-burning reactor, which has hardly been in operation over the past 20 years despite its intended key role in Japan's nuclear fuel recycling policy.
