Top court rules in favor of U.S. base relocation in Okinawa
File photo taken in June 2016 shows the Henoko coastal area in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, to which a U.S. Marine Corps air base is planned to be relocated from another part of the prefecture. The Supreme Court ruled on Dec. 20, 2016, in favor of the central government in its dispute with Okinawa over relocation of the key U.S. base. The top court's decision marked an end to a legal fight that followed Okinawa Gov. Takeshi Onaga's revocation of his predecessor's approval to reclaim land for the relocation of the Marines' Air Station Futenma from a crowded residential area in Ginowan to the Henoko coastal area of Nago.
