U.S. Army facility still occupies land in central Tokyo
Armed security guards stand at a gate to Akasaka Press Center, a U.S. Army facility in the Roppongi district of central Tokyo, on April 19, 2017. Under the U.S.-Japan Status of Forces Agreement, they are allowed to bear arms inside U.S. bases. The facility occupies about 27,000 hectares that was seized by the United States after Japan's 1945 surrender in World War II. The Tokyo metropolitan government has been demanding that the United States return the land. (Kyodo)
