Nobel laureate Shimomura dies at 90
Photo taken in September 2013 shows Osamu Shimomura, a co-winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry, speaking as he holds a trap to catch sea fireflies on Kone Island in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. In 1956, Shimomura became the world's first researcher to succeed in crystallizing luciferin, the luminescent substance in a sea firefly. He died at age 90 on Oct. 19, 2018. (Kyodo)
