Historic flyby by NASA spacecraft
NASA officials celebrate at a Johns Hopkins University laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, on Jan. 1, 2019, after its New Horizons spacecraft made history by passing by what is known as Ultima Thule, a 30 kilometer-wide object located at the edge of the solar system -- 6.5 billion km from the earth -- marking the farthest ever exploration of a body in outer space.
