Tsunami-hit school in northeastern Japan

Demolition work starts at Kadonowaki Elementary School in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, on Dec. 2, 2019. The school was damaged by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami and while about half of it will be demolished the central part of the building will be retained as a memorial to those that lost their lives in the disaster that engulfed wide coastal areas of northeastern Japan.
