Akira Watanabe wins Meijin title
Veteran shogi player Akira Watanabe meets the press after winning the most prestigious Meijin title by beating defending champion Masayuki Toyoshima 4-2 in a best-of-seven series on Aug. 15, 2020, in the western Japan city of Osaka. It is the first time that the 36-year-old, also holder of the Kio and Osho titles, has gained the Meijin title, one of the board game's eight major titles.
