A bronze statue

This is the statue of Ii Naosuke in ceremonial dress. Ii signed the five amity and commerce treaties with the U.S.A. and other countries in 1858 but was later assassinated in Tokyo. The copper statue was made by Fujita Bunzo and Okazaki Sessei and placed at Shokonsha in Hikone in 1910. The original statue shown in this photograph was donated to the country for scrap metal during World War II. Daibutsu (the Great Buddha) of Kamakura

The bronze lanterns on both sides of the statue were donated in January 1712 and still exist today. Behind them are the two stones presumed to be foundations of the former Great Buddha building. The Red Cross for the Russo-Japanese War

An ambulance dog supplied by Major Edwin Richardson, the renowned dog trainer to the Russian army during the Russo-Japanese war in 1904. The top photographs show Richardson giving the dog a message, barking to attract attention to stretcher bearers and on sentry duty at an outpost. The bottom illustrations show dogs in use by the Germans and Italians. When the First World War broke out, the Germans had about six thousand trained dogs whereas the British had just one. Richardson pioneered the training of messenger dogs in Britain despite reservations from the military authorities. Eventually, he became commandant of the British War Dog School at Shoeburyness which successfully supplied hundreds of dogs who worked as messengers at the front. Date: 1904

A bronze ox at Kitano Shrine

An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G. The treasure tower at the Okusha,Toshogu Shrine,Nikko

The tomb of first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu was placed in the inner shrine at Nikko Toshogu. When the stone pagoda, which had replaced an early wooden structure, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1683, the fifth shogun Tsunayoshi rebuilt it in Chinese-style bronze.
