A bronze statue

This is the statue of Ii Naosuke in ceremonial dress. Ii signed the five amity and commerce treaties with the U.S.A. and other countries in 1858 but was later assassinated in Tokyo. The copper statue was made by Fujita Bunzo and Okazaki Sessei and placed at Shokonsha in Hikone in 1910. The original statue shown in this photograph was donated to the country for scrap metal during World War II. It was rebuilt in Ninomaru Park at Hikone Castle.==Date:unknown, Place:Hikone, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number72‐151‐0]
