      Shinkyo Bridge spans Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko-Sannai. The bridge is also called Jabashi (Snake Bridge), referring to the legend that the priest Shodoshonin, when founding Nikko, crossed the river by walking over two big snakes released by Shinja-Daio.         This is a magnificient view of the famous Zaimoku Island, an interesting geological arch formed by erosion. The layered sedimentary rock of this island teaches us much about the origins of Matsushima Bay. Unfortunately, the arch was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1969.           Rokuban Yagura (No.6 Watchtower) is on the right, and Sanban Yagura (No.3 Watchtower) is visible behind the bridge. Originally, there were seven watchtowers.                       Labeled L17 HACHIMAN(B), the photograph depicts the Jogu Romon (upper shrine gate). The tablet on the gate reads Hachiman-gu.
