      The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide.             An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background.               Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.                   The big bell of Chion-in Temple is seen from the west side of the bell tower. Men and women in kimono are looking at the bell over the iron fence. Also called Yoshimizu's Bell, this is the largest bronze bell in Japan and was cast at Sanjo-Kamanza foundry in 1636. It is 5.4m high, 2.7m in diameter, 29cm thick, and weighs 7.5 tons. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.
