The Tamadare Falls

Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.       The south garden of the Namikawa Yasuyuki residence at Sanjo Shirakawa Bridge-agaru is viewed from inside. Mr. Namikawa and a woman with a fan are sitting together on a veranda beside the Japanese kaiyushiki garden designed by Ogawa Jihei. Another woman, possibly a maid, is standing behind the woman, holding a small basket in her left hand. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.         These wisteria terraces were all destroyed during World War II air raids. The wisteria trees of today were planted one by one from around 1950 by the local people. The wisteria blossoms at Kameido Tenjin Shrine are said to be the best in Tokyo, and they were chosen as one of the New Best One Hundred Scenes of Tokyo.           An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G. It is said that this pine was planted by Yoshimitsu Ashikaga. The branches were formed to look like a boat. On the left is the ohjoin (large study), and the roof of the kuri is visible on the right.               Higashi Honganji Temple

              Taishi-do of Higashihonganji Temple is viewed from the southeast. There are many children around the big water fountain. The Taishi-do took 15 years to build. It was completed in 1895 according to the wishes of the head priest, Otani Kosho. Built in single-story irimoya style with a tiled roof, it is 76m wide, 56m deep, 38m high, and covers 3,800 square metres.                   It happens once in a while there is a lot of snow from February to March at Hakone. Depending on the altitude the amount of snowfall is evidently different. There is a snowbelt around the altitude of 300m and 500m and below that line, the snow hardly accumulates. Therefore, this must be higher than Ohiradai and definately not Yumoto or Tonosawa.
