        Visitors to the temple saw this scene after passing through the front gate (existent) built between 1688 and 1704, going up the stairs donated by Kato Kiyomasa and installed between 1596 and 1615, and then passing through the sanmon gate built along with the five-story pagoda by the second shogun Tokugawa Hidetada in 1608. The building on the left is the drum tower where ceremonial drums were stored. Both the gate and the drum tower were destroyed in World War II. The 29.5-meter pagoda however survived and still stands today as the oldest pagoda in the Kanto region and a National Important Cultural Asset.           This is a teahouse in front of Otenmon Gate at Heian Shrine. Lanterns hang near the wisteria trellis. People are relaxing under the wisteria blossoms. A woman holding a parasol on a rickshaw is visible on the right, as well as Daigokuden Hall beyond the gate. The shrine was built in 1895. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.             Yasaka Shrine is seen from the east, facing west. The main hall is on the right and the worship hall on the left. The main hall, rebuilt by the fourth shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna in 1654, is modeled after the Shishinden. Built in single-story irimoya style with a cedar-bark roof, the front is about 12m and the sides about 11m wide. The deity Susano-no-mikoto is worshipped in the central chamber, Kushiinadahime-no-mikoto in the eastern chamber, and Hachiojishin in the western chamber. Taken by F.               On the left is the Kaguraden of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (lower hall of worship). At the top of the stairs is the main shrine of Hachimangu. There are 62 steps in total. The Hachimangu that Yoritomo moved from Tsurugaoka is said to have been located under the staircase, but it was burned in a fire in 1193 and moved to the present higher location in November of the same year. The building on the left is the Kaguraden.                 The Koro (Drum Tower), located to the left of Yomei Gate at Nikko Toshogu, is decorated with 38 carvings including depictions of tortoises, dragons and clouds. Honji-do (Yakushi-do), famous for its meiryu (crying dragon) ceiling painting is visible on the right. The dragon was painted by Kano Eishin Yasunobu, but the entire building was later destroyed by fire and rebuilt.
