    NARA, Japan - - The three Buddhist statues at the Golden Pavilion of the Yakushiji temple in Nara get a New Year's dust-off in a cleaning ceremony attended by 500 visitors on Dec. 29. The photo shows the two bodhisattva statues, Nikko on the left and Gakko on the right, being carefully cleansed by Buddhist priests. The sitting Tathagata statue in the center shines after cleansing. Nikko and Gakko will be exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum in March next year for a four-month period. The three Buddhist statues are designated national treasures.

        The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a seated Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai) made of bronze. Designated as a National Treasure in 1897, it is the main object of worship at Kohtokuin Shojosenji Temple. Historic documents state that work began on a gilt statue of Shaka Nyorai Buddha about 13.5 meters in height in the year 1252. It is not known when it became a statue of Amida Buddha.               The sanmon (front gate) at Sensoji Temple was called Niomon because statues of the guardian deities Kongo Rikishi were installed on both the right and left (present-day Hozomon). Statues of Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri Bodhisattva) and Shiten (four angels) are installed on the second floor of the gate building. The plaque Sensoji is based on calligraphy by the head priest of the Tendai Sect, Ryosho Hoshin-o.
