Tukiji imperial naval college

From the May 1,1873 edition of The Far East . The dormitory of the Naval Academy just after it was completed. It was a two-story Western-style building with walls the colour of gray. A tower is seen in the centre, and the windows have Venetian blinds. It was demolished in 1883.                   During Edo era, there were Naraya, Edoya, Maruya, Yamatoya, and Ohmiya Inns in Dogashima. The two-story building on the left is Yamatoya, the red tower is Yakushi-do (a Buddhist temple hall housing a statue of Yakushi). The waterfall in the centre is Shirabeno-taki. Godan Ryokan Inn stands above the falls. The white western building on the hill is Naraya Hotel and Fujiuya Hotel is to its left.                     The building across Honcho Dori is the Yokohama Post Office built in 1875 (presently part of the Prefectural Office grounds). The building next door is the Telegraph Station built in 1872. Since both were reconstructed in brick in the third decade of the Meiji Period, this photograph must have been taken prior to that time.                       The twelve-level Ryounkaku,Asakusa

                      The octagonal tower, Ryounkaku, was designed by British engineer William Kinnimond Burton and completed in October 1890. It is commonly called Junikai (the Twelve Stories). The first ten floors are brick while the eleventh and twelfth floors are wood. Many photographs of Ryounkaku were taken from Oike (Hyotan Pond). This could be the oldest of these photographs.
