During Edo era, there were Naraya, Edoya, Maruya, Yamatoya, and Ohmiya Inns in Dogashima. Godan Ryokan Inn stands above the falls. The white western building on the hill is Naraya Hotel and Fujiuya Hotel is to its left.         This photo has August 20, 1874 written on it. The foundry with two chimneys and the brick building with the boiler room which had started operation directly under the shogunate government in 1857 survived the typhoon. Another brick building, the lathe workshop with the first iron roof truss in Japan was not destroyed. The western-style building on the hill to the left is the dormitory for foreign staff built in April,1874.             The Great Bell, Hokoji Temple

            Hoko-ji temple was established by Hideyoshi Toyotomi (Shogun) in Higashiyama-ku,Kyoto-city and was imitated Nara Todai-ji Daibutsu-den. There was a great statue of Buddha, 20 meters in height, several earthquakes and thunderbolts had wreaked havoc on it. And also Daibutsu-den (the Hall of\r\nthe Great Buddha) had lost by fire in 1973. There is the Bonsho (a buddhist temple bell) inscribed Kokka Anko (May the State be peaceful and prosperous) and Kunshin Horaku (May the lord and\r\nvassal be rich and delight) in the precincts.                   Visitors to the temple saw this scene after passing through the front gate (existent) built between 1688 and 1704, going up the stairs donated by Kato Kiyomasa and installed between 1596 and 1615, and then passing through the sanmon gate built along with the five-story pagoda by the second shogun Tokugawa Hidetada in 1608. The building on the left is the drum tower where ceremonial drums were stored. Both the gate and the drum tower were destroyed in World War II. The 29.5-meter pagoda however survived and still stands today as the oldest pagoda in the Kanto region and a National Important Cultural Asset.                     Many buildings were built on the Umegasaki landfill area on the left. The Nagasaki Custom House is also visible dockside. Western-style buildings have been built by the Shinchi sea side and an embankment is in the process of being built behind the buildings. Shin-Ohashi Bridge, constructed in 1869 at the mouth of Nakashima River before redirection work, is visible. A new western-style building is constructed on Dejima across from Tsukimachi. However, neither Mii Church built in 1876 nor the bell tower of Seikokai Theology School built in 1878 is visible. Therefore, this photo must have been taken around 1872.                       Nagasaki Kiyomizudera Temple

                      This is a distant view of Kiyomizu Temple, said to have been founded by the priest Keijun who came to Nagasaki with a Buddhist statue in 1623. Historical documents state that the Kawarado (tiled temple building) in the centre, which was modeled after Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto with stone handrails surrounding it, was donated by Matsukura Shigemasa, lord of Shimabara Castle. The main temple building was added by Chinese resident He Gaocai in 1668. It is rather uncommon to use an arched doorway other than in the front hallway.
