      Five-story pagoda at Hokanji Temple

      The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide.           Niju-bashi Bridge,the Imperial Palace

          Kakumon Bridge spanning the inner moat (Nijubashi Moat) is said to have been built during the Kansei Period (1789-1801). During the Edo and Meiji Periods, the bridge in the foreground was called Nishinomaru Ote-bashi and the one behind it Nishinomaru Shimojo-bashi. The names currently used by the Imperial House Agency are Imperial Palace Main Gate Stone Bridge and Imperial Palace Main Gate Iron Bridge, respectively. Since 1948, commoners have been allowed to cross these bridges on January 2 and on the Emperor's birthday.             Arashiyama (Mt. Arashi) has a height of about 380 meters. It is located on the east edge of the Tanba Highlands and has Torigamine and Yamagamine to the northwest and Mt. Matsuo to the southeast. Hozu River runs from the north to the east at the northern foot of the mountain. A bamboo grove with a brushwood fence is shown at the bank of Hozu River, with hotels in the distance. A rickshaw with a woman passenger stands in front of the grove and a man stands nearby. The left side of the road is probably a boat anchorage.               This is a tomb commonly believed to be that of the Soga Brothers, Sukenari and Tokimune, and Sukenari's mistress, Toragozen. It is reported that they killed Suketsune Kudo at Makigari at the foot of Mt. Fuji in 1193, in relatiation for murdering their father. The size and the layout of these tombs, National Important Cultural Assets, appear to conform to that story. The engraved date of 1295 is present, and therefore this cannot be the tomb of the Sogas.
