The former first torii of the Hakone Shrine and the all-night lamp, with people in working costumes carrying balancing poles. Their stance is rather awkward, so they were probably told to stand that way.           This is the front of Yomeimon. The symbol of Nikko Toshogu, this gate displays craftsmanship and decorative techniques representative of the early Edo Period. The carvings on the gate total 508 in number and include people, animals (real and imaginary), flowers, birds, and patterns.               The cedars along Nikko Highway were donated by Matsudaira Masatsuna on the 33rd anniversary of the death of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The building visible in the background probably stands near Oiwake Jizo. This area was beautiful at the time. The sky is visible between the trees.                     A five-story pagoda stands behind the highest stone torii at the front of the Toshogu approach. This mixture of Buddhist and Shinto styles was seen frequently in Toshogu. The stone torii has a plague inscribed with the words Tosho Daigongen written by the Emperor Omizuo.
