The Dainichido Hall containing the Dainichi Nyorai on the shores of Daiya River was destroyed in the flood of 1902. The picture is the garden and Dainichido before they were destroyed. By the pond is a monument inscribed with a haiku poem by Basho.         The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple,the British Legation

        Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident). Bullet holes and sword marks still remain in the study and the entrance of the temple. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.                     The residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Totsuka Village (present day Totsuka-machi, Shinjuku Ward). The noted statesman lived in a Western-style mansion in Iida-machi (present day Kudan 1-chome) but later moved into the residence of the former lord of the Takamatsu Clan, Matsudaira Yorisato, located next to Tokyo Polytechnic School. After acquiring the house, he made some extensions and modifications and filled in the garden pond shown in photograph #4005.                       Taishi-do of Higashihonganji Temple is viewed from the southeast. There are many children around the big water fountain. The Taishi-do took 15 years to build. It was completed in 1895 according to the wishes of the head priest, Otani Kosho. Built in single-story irimoya style with a tiled roof, it is 76m wide, 56m deep, 38m high, and covers 3,800 square metres.
