            The south garden of the Namikawa Yasuyuki residence at Sanjo Shirakawa Bridge-agaru is viewed from inside. Mr. Namikawa and a woman with a fan are sitting together on a veranda beside the Japanese kaiyushiki garden designed by Ogawa Jihei. Another woman, possibly a maid, is standing behind the woman, holding a small basket in her left hand. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.               This photo captures women picking tea leaves at a tea farm in Uji. It is reported that Uji tea started when the Emperor Gosaga visited here in the mid thirteenth century and opened Komatsu and Kohata Nishiura Tea Garden. In those days the tea for exporting purposes has increased. Consequently the tea union and the tea processing companies were established by the instruction of Kyoto Prefecture and the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. Due to the efforts, the quality improvement and production increase were made. This could have been taken by the British photographer H. G.                     Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.
